SXSW 2009

I did not purchase a badge, so I decided to make the most of the free events that did not require a badge this year. There was surprisingly quite a lot to do, even without a badge. In fact there were so many free musical events, that I could not have attended them all, even if I had tried.

Party at Malverde

One of the acts that I really wanted to see was J*Davey. They were scheduled to perform at a location that required a badge, but like many music acts, they were also set to perform at a free venue that only required RSVP. One of those shows was on Friday night March 20th at Malverde, on 2nd street in Austin. The Malverde show was to include, J*Davey, Raekwon, The Cool Kids and many, many others.

Malverde was MUCH too small for the amount of people that attended. It was a very nice lounge and would have been great for a much smaller, more intimate kind of setting. Also, there were too many acts scheduled to perform in such a short amount of time. The show started very behind schedule, and by the end of the night, the headliners only got a chance to perform 2-3 songs each.

I am not sure why, but J*Davey did not perform. I was disappointed, but all in all, it was something to do, and hey-- at least it was free!

Levis FADER Fort Party

The Kanye show at the Levis FADER Fort party was a lot of fun. I got there about an hour before the show as to start and BAM! I already needed to go to the bathroom. After an hour waiting in line, I finally got to use the port-a-potty; the show started soon afterward.

I was expecting the show to be pretty much all Kanye, similar to the VH1 Storytellers that he did recently. The SXSW show was actually more relaxed than that-- more like a jam session, which is great. The show included Kid Cudi, Farnzworth Bently, and special guest appearances by Common and Erykah Badu.

I would like to know the back story or inspiration behind Kanye's female backup singer's winged outfit. I first noticed the wings during Kanye's VH1 Storytellers and American Idol. In person, the backup singer appeared to have on a black catsuit, with a black corset around the waist. The corset had leather buckles in the back. The wings appeared to be hooked to the corset in some way. The backup singer fully embraced the space-age bat look, pairing it with robotic dance moves.

Kanye's girlfriend Amber Rose was there as well. This video model (Ludacris video "What Them Girls Like") has been garnering a lot of attention on the gossip blogs lately. Maybe its the ultra short haircut, and ever so carefully styled outfits.
